Masks have been used throughout the horror genre to bring mystery and suspense to audiences. Masks can not only disguise the identity of you're antagonist but almost dehumanise them and bring a supernatural aspect to the screen.
The use of masks is spread across many different sub-genres of horror such as 'teen horror' like 'Halloween'(Carpenter 1978)to 'psychological' with 'A Clockwork Orange' (Kubrick 1971).
A feature of masks that has interested our group is those that are 'not quite human' this is known as 'uncanny valley' and the audiences awareness of the dehumanised but likeness of the antagonist puts them on each as they cannot tell the true identity of the character and find it hard to analyse them.
